Employment in Europe: Analysis of key issues

In conjunction with the Employment in Europe Report, DG-V of the European Commission also publishes a series of special Bulletins which contain analysis of selected issues in far greater detail than it is possible to include in the main Report. These Bulletins, like the main Report, are the product of work carried out by economists at Alphametrics.

The 1997 Bulletin contains three articles concerned with the process of employment growth and the functioning of the labour market across the EU, all written by Alphametrics consultants.

  • The first study, on employment-intensity, focuses on the significant differences which exist between Member States in the number of people employed for a given level of economic wealth and on the social and institutional factors which affect this.
  • The second study, on the rate of job turnover, examines the marked variations across the Union in the number of people who change jobs every year and in the average period which people spend in the same job.
  • The third study, on migration, analyses the extent of labour movement between different parts of the Union and compares this with the US, showing that while migration between different Member States is much less in Europe than between comparable parts of the US, movement between regions within countries is on a similar scale.

The Bulletin is available on request from Directorate V/A.1 of the European Commission at 200 rue de la Loi, B-1049, Brussels, fax number: +32 2 299 4571.
